GAME 15

Vidmar - Schlechter

St Petersburg 1909

Queen's Gambit Declined

1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.e3

White can play here 3.Nf3) ( or 3.Nc3 for if Black take the pawn with 3...dxc4 then follows 4.e4 b5? 5.a4 and 6.b3 recovering the pawn.

White:Vidmar; Black:Schlechter

3...Nf6 4.Nc3 e6 5.Nf3 Nbd7 6.Bd3 Bd6 7.O-O O-O 8.e4

This advance gives White the freer game.8...dxc4

 If 8...dxe4 9.Nxe4 Nxe4 10.Bxe4 e5 11.Qc2

9.Bxc4 e5 10.Bg5 Qe7 11.Qe2 h6 12.Bh4 b5 13.Bd3 b4

13...a6 did not yet suffice to enable him to play ...c6-c5, for Nd5 had to be prevented. But the move actually made has other disadvantages, one of the greatest being that it abandons the c4-square to White's pieces.

14.Nd1

Now White can compel Black to dissolve the game in the centre, by Nd1-e3 threatening Ne3-f5 as well as Ne3-c4.

14...exd4 15.Nxd4 Qe5

White:Vidmar; Black:Schlechter

 Bad would be 15...Bxh2 16.Kxh2 Qe5 17.f4 Qxd4 18.Bf2 Qd6 19.e5 Nxe5 20.fxe5 Qxe5 etc., as Black's pawns would have but little power.

16.Nf3 Qh5 17.Rc1

 More promising was 17.Ne3 Ne5 18.Bg3 Nxf3 and if 19.gxf3 Be5 20.Rac1 White would have a splendid position.

17...Ne5 18.Nxe5 Qxe2 19.Bxe2 Bxe5 20.f4

 If 20.Rxc6 Nxe4 and neither 21.Bf3 would do on account of ( nor 21.Rc4) 21...Nd2 ) ( also after 20.Bxf6 Bxf6 21.Rxc6 Rd8 threatening 22... Rd2 White's advantage would evaporate.

20...Bd4 21.Bf2 Rd8 22.Bf3 Ba6 23.Re1 Bb5 24.e5 Bxf2 25.Nxf2 Nd5 26.g3 Nb6 27.Rc2

White:Vidmar; Black:Schlechter

 Useless would be 27.Bxc6 Bxc6 28.Rxc6 Rd2

27...Bc4

An unfavourable manoeuvre.  First 27...Rac8 28.Rec1 Nd5 should have been played.

28.b3 Bd5 29.Bxd5 cxd5 30.Nd3 a5 31.Rc6 Rdb8 32.Rec1 a4 33.Nxb4 axb3 34.axb3 Ra3 35.R1c5

 A mistake. Rather 35.Rb1 was the right move. Then if 35...Nd7 36.Nxd5 Raxb3 37.Rxb3 Rxb3 38.Rc8 Kh7 39.Rc7 and wins.

35...Rxb3

Here 35...Nd7 should have been played. If 36.Rc8 then follows ( after 36.Rxd5 Nxe5 37.Rxe5 Rxb4 White's chances of winning are small indeed ) 36...Kh7 37.Rxb8 Nxc5 38.Nxd5 Rxb3 and winning would be a difficult task for White.

36.Rb5 d4 37.Rcxb6 Rxb6 38.Rxb6 d3 39.Kf2
