QUEEN'S PAWN GAME
KING'S INDIAN DEFENCE

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.g3 Bg7 4.Bg2 O-O 5.e4

This and the next move constitutes Rubinstein's system, which I prefer for White to the more usual continuation adopted in the Sajtar - Winter game. This line also has the merit of being less analysed in recent years

5...d6 6.Ne2 Nbd7 7.O-O e5 8.Nbc3 Ne8

I had not expected this move. On the other hand the new idea 8...c6 as played by Winter could here be met with 9.Kh1 threatening f4.

9.f4 Nb6

An ingenious move 9...exf4 10.Nxf4 would leave White very very well placed in the centre.

10.dxe5

10.b3 was probably sounder. White now gets an isolated pawn-couple against which Black operates cleverly.

10...Bg4

Better than 10...Nxc4 11.exd6 etc.

11.h3 Bxe2 12.Qxe2 dxe5 13.Be3

13. ...Qd5ch must be prevented.

13...exf4 14.gxf4 Bd4 15.Rad1 Bxe3 16.Qxe3 Qe7 17.b3 c6

Preventing the establishment of an outpost at d5.

18.Rd3 Ng7

Again well played. He plans to paralyse the pawn-couple by ...f5 and ...Ne6.

20.a4

White tries for too much. 20.Rxd8 Rxd8 21.Rxd8 Qxd8 22.Kf2 would leave White quite good chances in the ending.

20...Rxd3 21.Qxd3!

21.Rxd3 was much better here.

21...f5 22.e5

Any other move leads to hopeless pawn weaknesses on the king's side.

22...Qc5 23.Kh2

23.Qd4 Ne6 24.Qxc5 Nxc5 is not good thanks to White's 20th move.; 23.Kf1 might, however, be somewhat better.

23...Ne6

The weakness of White's f-pawn is now a serious matter.

24.Ne2 Rd8 25.Qxd8

Losing quickly, but 25.Qc2 Rxd1 26.Qxd1 Qe3 27.Qf1 g5 is equally unpleasant.

25...Nxd8 26.Rxd8 Kg7 27.Rd3

With the king at f1, White could now probably have held the game by 27.Rb8.  As it is 27...Qf2 is a killing threat. If now; 27.Nd4 Qe7 28.Rd6 (or 28.Rb8 Qc7 29.Re8 Qd7 etc.) 28...Nc8 and wins.; 27.Rd4 was the only hope of making a longer fight.

27...Qf2 28.Rd2 Qe3 29.Rb2 Nd7 30.Kh1

There is nothing to be done. If 30.b4 Qa3 etc.

30...Nc5 31.Ng1 Nd3

32...Nf2ch 33.Kh2 Qxf4 mate is an unanswerable threat.
