The Torbay Congress had its origins in 1965 in the
Raleigh Hotel in Dartmouth. At the time the hotel was
owned by Henry Baguley who had a chess playing son.
Unfortunately there were no clubs in the area so Henry
decided that he could combine business with pleasure and
arranged a congress in his hotel during the month of
November. Initially some 20 players took part many
of whom stayed at the Raleigh Hotel. After a few
years playing in the hotel the entries became too much
for the facilities and the congress was moved to the
Seymour Hotel In Totnes. It was here that Tony
Miles played in his quest for the Grand Prix award.
Some few years later the
congress moved to Torquay and was held for some years in
the Toorak Hotel until it seemed to get settled into the
Riviera Centre. It was during this period that Ray
Chubb took over the organisation on behalf of the Torbay
& District League. After a gap of one year the congress moved yet
again to the Belgrave Hotel in 2006, but that was sold in 2007
and the facilities that the congress had enjoyed were
altered and no longer provided adequate space for chess.
After a somewhat desperate
search Ray managed to strike a deal with the Riviera
Centre again and once more this will provide the venue
for future congresses.
