The Teignmouth Rapidplay Tournament has quickly become popular with players in the Southwest, attracting players from as far away as Bristol and Cambourne.  Organised and run by the Teignmouth Chess Club and overseen under the sharp eye of Ray Chubb, the tournament has been held at the Trinity School, Buckeridge Road, Teignmouth each year since its inauguration.  This is an ideal venue for the event as the spacious campus is available for some relaxation between rounds and as invariably fine weather seems to be the norm, these facilities can be enjoyed to the full.

Trinity School

Two Senior Tournaments are on the menu.  An Open Section is available for players graded 145 and above and the Graded Section for players graded under 145.  In addition a Junior Section is organised for players under 12 years and this is usually well attended.

Having six rounds of 30 minutes per player for each round, an early start is required and for those persons who find a 9:45 start a strain on their normal time of forsaking bed, breakfast can be obtained between rounds.

In the past the Open has been won by Jim Sherman and Andrew Greet so the quality of play can be rather demanding.

General Notes.

The Congress was again fortunate to be on a day of fine weather allowing competitors to relax between game rounds in the gardens and on the patio of Trinity School.

The Congress was opened by Teignmouth Councillor David Cox and Graham Hesse’ President of the Teignmouth Chess Club. This was the 30th Congress held at Trinity School, held by kind permission of Tim Waters, Headmaster, Trinity School.   Teignmouth Chess Club organises and runs this very successful and popular event in the West Country chess calendar.

There was a very good entry with 30 players in the Open Section, 44 players in the Major Section and 35 players in the under 12 years Junior Section.

Open.

After the 5th. Round there were five players with the possibility of at least sharing the first place: Dominic Mackle (Newton Abbot), Steve Piper (Salisbury), Allan Pleasants (Weymouth), Trefor Thynne (Newton Abbot) and Patryk Krzyzanowski (Yeovil).

Going into the final round Patryk had been paired with and already beaten Allan but it still remained that an outright winner could be Patryk or Allan, if Patryk lost and Allan won. The final round pairings were:

Patryk Krzyzanowski (white) 177 grade   versus   Trefor Thynne   (Black)    181 grade.

Dominic Mackle          (white) 195 grade  versus     Allan Pleasants (Black)    185 grade.

Allan scored a good win over Dominic to gain 5 points requiring a win from Party to secure the title. After a close match with Trevor ending in a time scramble and an illegal move two-minute time penalty awarded, Party won to gain the full point needed.

With Patryk Krzyzanowski winning this final game he emerged outright winner by half a point, to win the Open Section and the Walker Cup for his first time.

Major.

After round 5, Duncan MacArthur (Keynsham) lead by half a point on 4½. There were five players on 4 points, Brian Aldwin (Exeter), Keith Atkins (Tiverton), Christopher McKinley (Sedgemoor), Geoffrey Rosser (Torquay) and Chris Strong (Clevedon).

The final round pairings were:

Brian Aldwin (white) 110 grade   versus     Duncan MacArthur     (black)  136 grade.

Keith Atkins  (white) 134 grade   versus     Christopher McKinley (black)  131 grade.

Chris Strong (white) 136  grade   versus     Geoffrey Rosser         (black)  141 grade.

Keith Atkins and Christopher McKinley drew to leave them on 4½ points. Geoffrey Rosser beat Chris Stong to go to 5 points, therefore requiring a win from Duncan MacArthur to win outright.

Duncan MacArthur secured a good win and won the Major Cup for the third time in four years.

Junior.

The Junior section was well supported with players coming from all parts of Devon. Particularly strong were the 14 players from Broadclyst Primary School.

The juniors played the full 6 round Swiss tournament using chess clocks. The games leading up to the final joint three winners were of an excellent standard. An indication of the strength being that Theo Slade a joint winner with Thomas Kolya and Reece Whittington, is graded 131 and a current England Junior Squad player.

Taylor Finch played an excellent tournament but unfortunately lost his final round game or he may have shared in the first position.

General Notes.

The Congress was again fortunate to be on a day of fine weather allowing competitors to relax between game rounds in the gardens and on the patio of Trinity School.

The Congress was opened by Teignmouth Councillor Mayor Vince Fusco and Graham Hesse’ President of the Teignmouth Chess Club. This was the 29th Congress held at Trinity School, held by kind permission of Tim Waters, Headmaster, Trinity School.   Teignmouth Chess Club organises and runs this very successful and popular event in the West Country chess calendar.

Open.

The defending Champion Ben Edgell did extremely well to retain his title again against such a strong entry to the Open Section. After round 5 there were only two players in contention (Graham Bolt dropped from contention after three drawn games), Ben Edgell (on 4.5, grade 206) and Allan Pleasants (on 4, grade 170). Their game was drawn and Ben Edgell emerged out right winner, to win the Open Section for the fourth time and retain the Walker Cup.

Major.

After round 5, Allan Papier (on 4), Clive Pemberton (on 4), Charles Keen (on 4) and John Maloney (on 5) were all in contention. Pemberton (131) lost to Papier (131) and Keen (141) beat Maloney (121), resulting in the three-way tie for first place. Charles Keen had beat John Maloney and John Maloney had beat Allan Papier so the Major Cup was awarded to Charles Keen of Exeter.

Congress Organisation.

The Congress is an annual event run by the Teignmouth Chess Club.

Ray Chubb organises the event on behalf of the Club.

John Ariss from Torquay and a member of the Teignmouth Chess Club, is a fully qualified English Chess Federation Congress controller and ran both the Open and the Major events for the Congress.
