The 35th East Devon congress will be
held in the Corn Exchange, Exeter - formerly St Georges Hall- where
it has been held for many years. The Corn Exchange is situated
in the city centre very close to car parks and hotels.
The playing area itself is large
enough to accommodate 200 players very comfortably and is well lit,
warm and overlooks the main street of Exeter. Attached to the
playing area is a bar that sells a good selection of snacks and
meals. Once inside the Corn Exchange there is no need to leave
until all play has finished.
The congress brochure provides details
of hotel and guest house accommodation that are all in walking
distance of the Corn Exchange.
Exeter has many historic features
including a castle, guildhall and walks along the old city walls.
* An ungraded player
may not win more than the value of the third
prize, except in the Open.
** Team Prize was a
chess clock.

THE
2009 CONGRESS
9th March 2009
Fears
that the Congress would not be a financial success were
dispelled by a rush of late entries that meant the Open
had 50 contestants, the Major 45 and the Minor 58.
This was close to the average attendance over the last
ten years. A feature this year was a team of
players from the Netherlands participated and they were
particularly welcome. We do hope that they will
return next year and delight us with their original and
uncompromising style.
This was the first
tournament where our home-grown arbiters, Tony Tatam and
John Arris, have conducted their duties without the
surveillance of a Senior Arbiter. They performed
extremely well and we in Devon are proud of their
achievements. A controller's nightmare is to have
18 byes (!!!) in the first round. This occurred in
the Open but Tony overcame the problems in exemplary
style.
The Open had two
contestants who took advantage of the tournament now
being truly open rather than constrained to players
graded under 200. International Master Jack Rudd
was the favourite but he could have a stern challenge
from Bob Eames.
Full results and the prize
list will be posted here when they become available.
