Our thanks to Bob Jones for the following

Jamboree 2009.

Tacchi-Morris Arts Centre, Taunton. Sun. 20th September 2009.

Eight teams of 12, including players from as far apart as Plymouth, Cheltenham and Portsmouth, gathered at the Tacchi-Morris Arts Centre, to do battle in this annual pre-season joust.

Open Section: This comprised teams from Devon, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire. On paper, Devon were clearly stronger than their opponents, with a much greater strength in depth, and their defence of the Bristol Cup would be based on wins on the lower boards.

In practice, this failed to materialise, with Devon’s bottom half only winning 2˝/6 points, with several players losing to opponents who were much lower graded. A key game in this respect was that between G. Williams (Wilts) and Robert Thompson (Devon). At the start, players had been reminded that anyone not present 30 minutes after the start of play would be defaulted. After 25 minutes, Thompson advised the Controller that his opponent had not appeared and was getting close to being defaulted. The Wiltshire captain was informed of the situation, but at that moment in walked Williams with a minute to spare.

The game proceeded and Thompson got an advantage which normally he would have been able to convert into a win, but he misplayed the ending and lost, first his Queen and then the game. Having come within minutes of a default win against a Wiltshire player, which would have given Devon the overall victory, the eventual loss sealed victory for Wilts. On such small margins are battles decided.

Not that it was Thompson’s fault, of course; the Devon captain blundered a piece away in the opening and two other Devon players lost to much lower-graded opponents.

All credit, then, not only to Wiltshire for winning back the trophy Devon took from them last year, but also Gloucestershire, who could easily have been overwhelmed, but did well to come just a point behind their stronger opponents.

R. H. Jones.
