OBITUARY - JOHN PARKER

John Parker, who died over the week-end 17th-18th May 2008, was, together with his now ex-wife Joan, instrumental in reviving chess in N. Devon, when they started the Lynmouth Club in the 1960's.  This club came to be a force in the North Devon League and Devon County Club Associations competitions.  His family was well respected in the area and his son became the Mayor of Lynmouth.  During the 1970's and 1980's John became active on the county scene by becoming a member of the Paignton Congress Committee and was a familiar figure in local congresses.

Twelve years ago he moved to S. Devon living at Pridhamsleigh on the outskirts of Buckfasteigh.  He became a member of the Totnes Club, but two years later he moved his home to Newton Abbot and then became a member of the Teignmouth Club.  Later, he also joined the Newton Abbot Club when this was re-formed.  He made frequent visits to N. Devon to meet and play chess with old colleagues, sometimes having to take quite tortuous rail routes to his destination.

John was an enthusiastic club member and was always willing to turn out for Club and County sides even when asked at the very last moment.  His no-frills chess style was well rewarded in winning club competitions and, on occasion, the Intermediate section of local congresses.

His willing input to clubs and administration will be sorely missed.

The funeral service will be held in North Devon on 28th May at the United Reform Church, Lynton, commencing at 2 p.m.  Other enquiries should be made to the director of funeral services, Vernon Rush, Tele. No. 01643 862615.

TEIGNMOUTH HAVE WON THE SCHOFIELD CUP!

By virtue of their win over Tiverton by 4 points to nil, and a draw against Exmouth, with just the three teams involved, Teignmouth won the cup as Exmouth could only win over Tiverton by 3 points to 1.

A GOOD EVENING

The club enjoyed an evening of success on 15th January.  Two home matches were played in the Torbay League and both were won handsomely.

In a Division One match our side beat Newton Abbott by 3½ points to ½.  Winners were Alan Brusey, John Gorodi and Peter Halmkin.  Bill Ingham drew his game.  Peter's win was accomplished by a nice smothered mate.

The Third Division side beat TBGS by 3 points to 1.  Winners here were John Robson, Dennis Ayress and Ray Chubb.

A view of both teams.

MIXED FORTUNES

Teignmouth started their Bremridge Cup programme on Saturday 12th January, playing at home against Exeter.  They scored a fine win by 4½ points to 1½, with everyone contributing to the score.

Meanwhile the Moyle team were playing Exeter in the hinterland of Nadderwater.  They were not so successful and lost by 3½ points to a mere ½.

A HALF-WAY APPRECIATION

As the half-way point of the season is fast approaching, it is time to take a look at how Teignmouth are faring in the two leagues - Torbay and DCCA.

Taking the latter first, we entered all the competitions with the exception of the Ralph Newman rapid play competition.  In the Bremridge and Mamhead we have yet to play a match, but our first team will be launched on 13th January against Exeter.  Our first Mamhead outing will be against Exmouth at home on 16th February.  That competition will come to a quick finish as with just ourselves and Exmouth in the competition the final game will be played one week later at Exmouth.

In the Schofield, we are standing in pole position.  Again there are just three entries - Tiverton, Exmouth and ourselves.  Our team filled their boots against Tiverton, winning 4-0.  Recently we drew with Exmouth, and as Exmouth have yet to play Tiverton, they will have to equal our score against them to draw level.

We have also started well in the Moyle, winning against Tiverton and having just Exeter and Ifracombe to play.

In the Peter Rooke knock-out we are already seeded into the Final and will meet the winners of Exeter and Newton Abbot.

We are not doing quite so well in the Torbay League.  We were dispatched from the knock-out by Totnes and in the other competitions, St Marychurch have stood in our way, having lost matches against them in both Divisions 2 and 3.  In addition our third team lost to Totnes but gained revenge in the return. Our first team are successful to date having beaten South Hams and drawn with St. Marychurch.  We have yet to play Newton Abbot who have beaten St. Marychurch.   However, with two rounds in Divisions 1 and 3 there are still chances to reverse our losses.
