One of the stars has been twelve year old Laurens Stegink who has played in two matches and won both games.  Laurens attends the Torquay Boys' Grammar School and is one of a group of very good young players at present at the school.  On 14th January 2006, Teignmouth played Tiverton and Laurens, playing on board four secured the win that allowed Teignmouth to draw the match.  His game was not flawless but his persistent good play forced his opponent into making errors.

TOURNAMENTS AS AT 8/3/06

Press Release November 2005

Teignmouth make Good Start to Chess Season

Teignmouth Chess started the Torbay Chess league season with good performances by both the 1st and 2nd Division teams.

John Gorodi, First Division Captain, was able to field a very strong team against South Hams, with the return from College of Ewan Walton (155) a former junior member of the Teignmouth Chess Club. Alan Brusey drew with Paul Brooks, Ewan Walton beat Dennis Russell, John Gorodi beat Roy Greenhaulgh and Bill Ingham beat John Dunleavy recording 3.5 to 0.5 point win for Teignmouth.

John Ariss, Second Division Captain, was disappointed in only managing to secure a draw against Torquay after John Parker (125) on Board 1 gained a good win against the higher graded D Hutchinson (132). John Simons lost to Robert Thompson, Wally Sapiacha drew with Norman Tidy and Dennis Ayress drew with Richard Ballantyne.

Club Champion Alan Brusey competed against a very strong entry including the eventual Open winner Russian Grand Master Alexander Cherniaev. in the second annual National Civil Service Open Chess Tournament at Birkbeck College, London during November. The tournament was started to commemorate the centenary of the Civil Service Chess Club. Alan Brusey scored an excellent 3 from 5 in the 5 round-Swiss format, and won the Phil Primett Memorial Trophy as the highest scoring Civil Servant.

The Teignmouth Chess Club is now meeting regularly on Tuesday evenings at The Alice Cross Centre, Teignmouth and it is not too late to join and enter the Club internal competitions or enjoy the general play.
