The Torbay K-O Final was contested over 6 boards, against Plymouth at the Plymouth University. The results were Teignmouth players names first: Bill Ingham draw R Luffman; John Gorodi beat B Medhurst; Wally Sapiacha draw A Tatam; W. Tindal beat G Fowles; Ray Chubb lost Y Timonshenkov; Patrick Gwynne beat D Scantlebury, giving a 4 to 2 victory for Teignmouth. The match was held in the balance as the last game approached the final time control with both John Gorodi and Saun Pope, both running out of time to finish the match within the total four hours allowed. John Gorodi had the winning position on the board as Saun Pope tried desperately to cause John Gorodi enough problems to make him use up his three remaining minutes and make him loose on time. The atmosphere was electric with the spectators bursting with their opinions as to the winning combinations. John Gorodi held is nerve and called upon his years of experience in pressure chess situations and won both on the board position and on time. The Teignmouth Chess Club had its awards ceremony with the President John Simons and Competitions Secretary John Gorodi presenting the following trophies: Club Champion Alan Brusey. Runner-up Bill Ingham. Alan Brusey goes forward to compete in the County Champions Winter Woods K-O. Minor Champion Dennis Ayress. Player of the Year was Patrick Gwynne winning all his matches.
