Three
players reached the 12 point threshold so, for them, the tie-break system came
into force. To help me work this out, I called in Fred Hodge, who devised the
original formula and was not involved in the competition this year, and we
agreed on the following outcome.
The
3 players involved in the tie-break were (a) Mark Abbott (b) Kevin Hurst (c)
Brian Gosling.
Stage
1:
Determine each player's 12 best results, and the one who has the most wins in
those 12 is the winner.
Result:
This eliminates Gosling who had only 9 wins altogether, but Abbott and Hurst
each had 12 wins, so proceed to….
Stage
2: Look
at the individual results between the players involved.
Result:
Abbott & Hurst played one game and drew, so proceed to….
Stage
3: Find
the sum of opponents' scores of the 12 wins they are counting.
Result:Abbott could afford to drop one of his wins against Sparke who was the
equal lowest scoring of all his opponents, leaving him with 12 other wins to
count.
Hurst
could drop his wins against Neat, Hase and both against Sparke, leaving him with
12 wins against opponents who scored 4 points or more.
