Please note:

(a)  Seeding: The four highest graded players in the draw are seeded.

(b)  Game Arrangements: Dates, times and venues should be mutually agreed. Please let me know by email when arranged. The above pairings for the first round indicate that the player with black is the home player and responsible for the initial contact. For the semi final and final the home player indicated should make contact with the away player and toss for colour on the day. Games may be played at an intermediate neutral venue if both players are in agreement.

The Teignmouth Chess Club meet throughout the summer and the Alice Cross Centre may be used as a venue. Starts at 7 p.m. and will stay open until all games are completed. If you wish to use the Centre please let Ray Chubb know in advance.

(c)  Replays:  In the event of a replay, colours are reversed and it is expected that the home player in the first game should be prepared to travel for the 2nd.  It is difficult to legislate on this point, as individual circumstances vary so much, but it is hoped that goodwill and common sense will prevail. A willingness to travel was understood as a condition of entry.

(d)  Rate of Moves: The rate of moves is 40 moves in 100 minutes plus 20 minutes for the rest of the game - the standard rate for DCCA games.

(e)  Game Score (Duplicate Score Sheets): Games will be posted on the ChessDevon web site. Duplicate score sheets for your games are available on request. By mutual agreement, one or both players should provide, within 3 working days of the game, their game score. If hand written, legible and checked and duly signed. Alternatively and much preferred an Emailed copy: - typed in score sheet or entered into a Chess database.  If you can offer some analysis as well, so much the better.

(f)    Competition Timetable: It would facilitate the smooth-running of the competition if fairly prompt starts could be made to each round, as there could be several replays in some cases, and the ultimate deadline is the DCCA Autumn meeting on Friday 25th  September, at which the presentation of the Thomas Winter-Wood Shield to the winner will be made.

LANCASHIRE U180 vs DEVON U180

Having beaten Notts 8.5-7.5 in the Qtr Final of the National Stage County U180 last month, we had a weakened team out against Lancashire yesterday. But despite being outgraded on the bottom 7 boards we drew 8-8 and won on board count. So we go to the Final on July 4th in Warwick to play the winner of Middlesex and Warwickshire in the other semi final.
The match was tight with no results for the first 2 hours. Then 6 draws from myself, Bill Ingham, Oliver Wensley, Chris Scott, Meyrick Shaw and Jonathan Underwood and a loss by Mike Stinton-Brownbridge swiftly followed each other. In fact we were not worse in any of these games. The key moment happened when in a bizarre game David Toms won - he went from what could have been a pawn down to a piece up as his opponent took with the wrong bit, to blundering the piece back to winning another piece later, bringing the match level.
Out of the rest of the games Vignesh played well but let a dominant position slip and then blundered. Dave Regis and Andrew Kinder were always under the cosh and despite a long struggle they lost.
Steve Martin pulled off a good win from what could have been a difficult opening. Paul Brooks was always ahead but distracted by his blind opponent dropping his braille set all over the floor and the game ended in a draw later. Alan Brusey and Mark Abbott were always in control and gave us confidence of the win as they converted there strong positions.
So it came down to the last match with the scores level. Keith Atkins, who earlier played a fine piece sacrifice, forced the winning of a queen for rook, then swapped his queen for two rooks to leave the exchange up (rook v bishop). With 10 minutes each left of the 5 hours session Keith settled for repetition rather than risk any chance of a fluke, but was clearly winning. The draw for the team was agreed, already knowing that we would win on board count.
So a good team performance in the sunshine, near Worcester.

Note : The result of the game on Board 14 has been amended

due to the illness of the player of the white pieces.

 DCCA TEAM QUICK-PLAY

Held at Newton Abbot 19.10.14

The annual DCCA Team Quick-Play for teams of four players was, as has been the case for a number of years now, held at Newton Abbot Chess Club’s  Courtenay Centre headquarters.

The entry was disappointingly down on last year with clubs  who normally enter two teams only sending one this year. Clashes with other chess events such as the Guernsey Congress deprived the event of several players who would normally expect to be there and, once again, it is scarcely credible that there were no teams from any of Plymouth, Exeter , Torquay or Barnstaple, four of the five largest conurbations in the county.

The eight teams who did participate enjoyed a lively afternoon of fast-moving chess (12 minutes per player per game). With eight teams it was decided to make it a seven-round all-play-all.  The host club, Newton Abbot, were far from at full strength which soon made it clear that the EXMOUTH  EAGLES team (average grade 170) would have a fairly comfortable passage on the way to winning the THOMAS CUP. In fact they only dropped 2 ½ points out of 28 and two members of the team, JOHN STEPHENS and BRIAN GOSLING, scored 7 out of 7.

The HODGE CUP for teams with a total grade under 600 went to NEWTON ABBOT and the GRADED TROPHY (under 450)  went to a popular winner, SIDMOUTH JUNIORS who gave a very good account of themselves. The INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE TROPHY wen to JOHN STEPHENS.

The event was superbly controlled by RAY CHUBB of Teignmouth club.

For those clubs who missed out on the event, please try and send a team next year! The event is a very pleasant social occasion  and marks the start of the busy competitive season for Devon’s club chessplayers.

JOHN FRASER

In mid-October John Fraser a sixth-form student at TORQUAY BOYS’ GRAMMAR SCHOOL will be travelling  to BATUMI in GEORGIA to represent England in the EUROPEAN YOUTH CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS . This is the latest feather in the cap of a boy whose rise to prominence has been one of the big success stories of Devon Chess in recent years.

John, a member of NEWTON ABBOT CHESS CLUB, was spotted by his chess teacher at TBGS, Trefor Thynne, from the moment he started at the school as having something special about him because he learned so quickly and maintained a steep rate of upward progress throughout his first five years at the school. This, combined with an excellent temperament and a good deal of hard work in preparation, has made John into Devon’s top junior player and an England international.

A list of John’s chess achievements in 2013 and 2014 makes impressive reading:

In early 2013 he represented England in the World Junior Championships in Thessaloniki, Greece, and scored 4 ½ out of 9.

In the ECF Congress at Torquay in Torquay in July 2013 he scored 7 out of 11 in the Major Open and thus qualified to play in the British Championship at Aberystwyth in July 2014.

In 2013 he won the English Under 16 Grand Prix title.

In late 2013 he was again selected to represent England, this time at the European Youth Championships in Montenegro.

In 2014 he reached the TERAFINAL (CHALLENGERS’ SECTION) of the UK CHESS CHALLENGE for the third time and scored 4 ½ out of six (also for the third time).

In August 2014 he represented England in the GLORNEY CUP (Team Tournament for England Scotland Wales and Ireland) in Stirling, Scotland and scored 4 out of 6, remaining unbeaten).

He played board 1 for the Torquay Boys’ Grammar School team which reached the Finals of the English Chess Federation’s National schools’ Cup, held at Uppingham School, Rutland in July 2014.

He has been a regular member of the Devon County senior teams, now playing on a high board.

He is a key member of Newton Abbot Chess club’s teams in the Devon and Torbay Leagues and his current ECF grade is 182

All of the above John has combined successfully with his GCSE studies at TBGS.
