Individual Championships 2014/2015

Dear Chess Colleague,

Individual Competitions

The DCCA is keen to maintain interest in all the competitions and especially the Individual Competitions.

I have sent out personal invites for entry to the Individual County Championship, The E. J. Winter-Wood Trophy, to players 170 grade or more.

This is an invitation to enter the appropriate competition from the Intermediate, Minor and the Ladies championship. The Intermediate 140 to 169 grades inclusive and the Minor under 140. Ladies is an Open competition. There are cups for all the Individual Competitions.

The rules for the Individuals Competitions are attached but please note that I would expect anyone entering these to have transport and to be able to complete all the matches by the deadlines. They will be in the form of either an all-play-all or a knock-out depending on the number of entries. It should be assumed that matches are to be played at weekends (due to the time control and the travelling involved) unless both players agree to a week day. Also a match can either be played at a club or the home player’s house but the playing conditions should be as good as normal team matches, i.e. normal sized tables, Staunton set, chess clock and quiet.

Entries can be posted using the form below or email your details.

Please circulate these competition details to any other appropriate people and let me know entries by 13th October.

Thank you for your support.

Competition Secretary

Please note:

(a)  Seeding: The four highest graded players in the draw are seeded.

(b)  Game Arrangements: Dates, times and venues should be mutually agreed. Games may be played at an intermediate neutral venue if both players are in agreement. The above pairings do not indicate who the home player is - this must be agreed between the players involved.

The Teignmouth Chess Club meet throughout the summer and the Alice Cross Centre may be used as a venue. Starts at 7 p.m. and will stay open until all games are completed. If you wish to use the Centre please let me know in advance.

(c)  Colour: Toss for colour in the first game in each round. If the first game is drawn, colours are reversed for each subsequent game

(d)  Rate of Moves: The rate of moves is 40 moves in 100 minutes plus 20 minutes for the rest of the game - the standard rate for county games.

(e)  Replays:  In the event of a replay, it is expected that the home player in the first game should be prepared to travel for the 2nd.  It is difficult to legislate on this point, as individual circumstances vary so much, but it is hoped that goodwill and common sense will prevail. A willingness to travel was understood as a condition of entry.

(f)    Game Score (Duplicate Score Sheets): Games will be posted on the Chess Devon web site. Duplicate score sheets for your games are available on request to me.

(g)  By mutual agreement, one or both players should provide, within 3 working days of the game, their game score. If hand written, legible and checked and duly signed (alternatively and much preferred an Emailed copy: - typed in score sheet or entered into a Chess database.  If you can offer some analysis as well, so much the better.

(h)  Competition Timetable: It would facilitate the smooth-running of the competition if fairly prompt starts could be made to each round, as there could be several replays in some cases, and the ultimate deadline is the DCCA Autumn meeting on Friday 26 September, at which the presentation of the Thomas Winter-Wood Shield to the winner will be made.

DCCA Competitions Summary for Season 2013 14.

Presented at DCCA AGM 27 June 2014.

The leagues, Knockout and individual competitions have all been finalised

The leagues and Knockout went smoothly, with no defaults.

The individual championships went very well generally. The Minor, Intermediate and Ladies championships games were all played within the program. However for various reasons best known to the individuals the County Championship competition did not run to program and double default results were recorded. Appended (Item 1) is a suggested rule that may clarify players responsibility and options.

Item 1             Rule Proposal

Individual Competitions Game Arrangement Rules.

It is the responsibility of the “Home” player in the draw to arrange the date and time and venue of the game.

3 dates must be offered; the dates must not be consecutive or all contained in the same week. If the “Away” player cannot make any of these dates then the “Home” player must offer two further dates in a different time span.

These dates must be notified to the Competition Secretary.

If agreement still cannot be reached, the “Home” player wins the game by default. (If the “Home” player does not offer the dates as required above then the “Home” player looses the game by default.

These procedures must be completed by the “Bye date” in the Competition Table issued by the Competitions Secretary.

When a game date has been agreed then the game must be played on that date unless both players agree to play on another date (only one such arrangement permitted). If the players cannot agree then the player refusing to play defaults the match.

In case of a dispute the Competition Secretary’s’ decision is final.

DCCA AGM 2014

The date originally chosen for the Association's Annual General Meeting has had unfortunately to be changed again.

The originally chosen date of Friday 4th July clashes with the Finals of the ECF National Schools' Championships  to be held at Uppingham School, Rutland for which Torquay Boys' Grammar School (whose chess team I manage) have recently qualified.

The new date for the meeting is FRIDAY 27th JUNE with a 7 p.m. start at the Courtenay Centre Newton Abbot.

I apologize for the unavoidable change to the original date and trust that you will be able to attend.

May  I ask you to remind your fellow club members that any member of an affiliated club is entitled to attend the meeting. It would be good  to see some new faces taking an interest in the affairs of the county's premier chess organisation.

Yours sincerely

Trefor Thynne

Newton Abbot win the Rooke KO Cup

         DCCA KNOCK-OUT (Peter Rooke) CUP

Final 2014: Newton Abbot v Tiverton

Saturday 3rd May 2014  (at Newton Abbot)

Holders Newton Abbot welcomed Tiverton to the Courtenay Centre for the 2014 version of the Rooke Cup Final.  This interesting competition played over 8 boards with a maximum team grading total under 1120 is a real test of a club’s strength in depth and in addition sets team captains interesting selection dilemnas: do you put your club’s best players in the team in the hope of winning the match on the top boards (this can require the availability of players graded under 100 but who may be worth more i.e.  improving juniors!) Or do you aim for a team with more players closer to the competition median grade  of 140. One reason favouring the former policy is the fact that a 4-4 result where a team wins more games on the top boards will mean victory on board count.

This year it was clear from their arrival that the visitors were short of several key players and were only able to put out a team with a total grade of 1016, thus conceding an average of 12 points per board. The home side’s grade total was only 4 short of the maximum possible at 1115.

The match went very much according to the form book with the bottom three boards all proving relatively straightforward wins for Newton Abbot.  John Allen, 13 year-old Vignesh Ramesh and Mike Hussey were all soon in control of their games. This had the effect of removing the usual tension from the match and when on board four Nijad Rahmli overcame Ivor Annetts to gain swift revenge for a Mamhead Cup defeat against him a few weeks earlier, the outcome never looked in doubt. Victory was sealed when Wilf Taylor on board 4 agreed a draw against County Treasurer Keith Atkins even though his piece sacrifice was surely winning anyway. On boards 1 and 5 Tiverton fought back with good wins for John Knowles against Devon West of England Ladies’ Champion, Jacqueline Barber-Lafon and top board Simon Bartlett against  County President Paul Brooks.

The remaining game on board two saw a hard-fought draw between county match captain Brian Hewson and Country Secretary Trefor Thynne leaving the final score as Newton Abbot 5 Tiverton 3 and the home side celebrating a fifth cup win in eight  years.

It would be good next year to see more entries from other clubs for this competition!
