THE BRITISH CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS

The British Championships for 2013 will beheld at the Riveria Centre, Torquay during the period 28th July to 11th August.  This provides the opportunity for Devon to register their place on the chess map of England by providing details of the various chess organisations that operate in the county.  Every club is offered the chance to provide details of their activities that will be included in a "front desk" display situated in the entrance hall to the event.  Trefor Thynne is co-ordinating this display and clubs should send their contributions to him.

The display will require manning during each afternoon and volunteers to man the desk are required.  Again, please direct your offer to Trefor Thynne as soon as possible.

Theo      Slade.               Barnstaple                         Tele. no.       01288 361802

Please note:

(a)  Seeding: The draw is set out above keeping the stronger players apart, as far as possible.

(b)  Game Arrangements: Dates, times and venues should be mutually agreed. Games may be played at an intermediate neutral venue if both players are in agreement. The above pairings do not indicate who is the home player - this must be agreed between the players involved. Note that the semi final game can be played before the Prelim Round in the ties not affected.

The Teignmouth Chess Club meet throughout the summer and the Alice Cross Centre may be used as a venue. Starts at 7 p.m. and will stay open until all games are completed. If you wish to use the Centre please let me know in advance.

(c)  Colour: Toss for colour in the first game in each round. If the first game is drawn, colours are reversed for each subsequent game.

(d)  Rate of Moves: The rate of moves is 40 moves in 100 minutes plus 20 minutes for the rest of the game - the standard rate for county games.

(e)  Replays:  In the event of a replay, it is expected that the home player in the first game should be prepared to travel for the 2nd.  It is difficult to legislate on this point, as individual circumstances vary so much, but it is hoped that goodwill and common sense will prevail. A willingness to travel was understood as a condition of entry.

(f)   Duplicate Score Sheets: I am enclosing duplicate score sheets for each player. Both players should return to me, within 3 working days of the game, their completed top copy, legible and duly signed, as in any congress.   If you can offer some analysis as well, so much the better.

(g) Competition Timetable: It would facilitate the smooth-running of the competition if fairly prompt starts could be made to each round, as there could be several replays in some cases, and the ultimate deadline is the DCCA Autumn meeting, at which it is hoped the presentation will be made.

Dear Club Secretary,

                                    ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

I am writing to give notice that the 2013 Annual General Meeting of the D.C.C.A. will take place on Friday 7th June at  the Courtenay Centre, Kingsteignton Road, Newton Abbot  (TQ12 2QA) starting at 7 p.m. There is parking available at the Centre or in the nearby public car-park (free after 6 p.m.)

I hope that you will ensure that your club is represented at the meeting at which important issues for the future of the Association will be discussed and awards for the 2012-13 season presented. (Any member of an affiliated club is eligible to attend the meeting and I would encourage you to bring the meeting to the attention of your members as it is in this way that the Association may be able to  attract new blood into its group of officials).  With the British Championships being held in the county this summer this is an important time for Devon chess and a healthy turn-out will be a good sign.

                        Yours sincerely,

                                   T.F.Thynne

THE Agenda can be obtained HERE.

Notice by the DCCA Acting Secretary to all Devon Clubs

 Dear Club Secretary,

As you are no doubt aware, the British Championships are coming to Devon again this summer.  They are taking place at the English Riviera Centre, Torquay between 28th July and 10th August.  At a recent DCCA meeting it was agreed that Devon Clubs should take advantage of this opportunity to publicize their activities.  To this end, there will be a permanent display for the period of the championships in te entrance lobby of the Riviera Centre showing the location of te chess club in te county.

It would be very helpful if club secretaries could let me have in advance any publicity material that they wish to display showing information about the premises  and meeting times of their clubs and giving contact details of key officials. Alternatively, this material can simply be brought to the stand for display. It would also be very helpful if any  members of  Devon clubs who would be willing to man this stand for, say, one morning or afternoon  could make themselves known to me.

I hope that all clubs in the county will take advantage of this chance to bring their activities to the widest possible notice.

Yours sincerely

 Trefor Thynne

 Acting Secretary, DCCA

      BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIP 2013           (29th July – 9th August)

The ECF has agreed to allocate one place in the British Championship to be held at Torquay this summer to a nominee of the host county, Devon.  At its Council Meeting on 22nd March, the Devon County Chess Association agreed to invite applications from Devon players interested in taking up this place.  Players wishing to be considered should submit a letter outlining briefly their recent chess career to the Acting Secretary of the Association, Trefor Thynne. The Association will then make a decision as to the successful applicant.

Letters should reach the Acting Secretary by May 31st. They should be sent to:  T.F.Thynne, Acting Secretary D.C.C.A., 54 Silverwood Avenue, Newton Abbot TQ12 4LG

The player whose application is successful will have to pay the full entry fee of £200. Entries at this entry fee rate must be submitted to the ECF postmarked prior to 8th July 2013.

BREMRIDGE - EXMOUTH V TEIGNMOUTH

In a match played on Saturday 16th February, the gradings on the teams' listing showed that Exmouth could anticipate a comfortable win.  However, after the first game ended in their favour, play settled down into a tense struggle which took some hours to be resolved in Exmouth's' favour.  A report and photographs can be seen on the Keverel website and the games are HERE

DCCA TEAM QUICKPLAY EVENT

Held at Newton Abbot Chess Club  14.10.12

The annual pre-season get-together of Devon clubs took place once again at the Courtenay Centre premises of the Newton Abbot club. This event has been increasing in popularity and thirteen teams, an increase of one on 2011,  gathered  for the 6-round competition for teams of four. Each game is played with 12 minutes per player on the clock so the action is fast and furious.

A tradition has been established of exotically-named teams and in recent years this has reflected an avian theme. So we had Tiverton Buzzards, Kestrels and Owls together with Exmouth Eagles and Egrets (think of Frank Sinatra: “ Yes we have (r)egrets but then again too few to mention!!). There were also Newton Abbot Rooks but since the other team from the home club were Knights these were not feathered rooks! One team was an amalgam of players from South Hams and Exmouth cunningly disguised as “Ham and Ex!”.

A notable feature of the event was the presence of 3 players graded 200+: Jack Rudd of Bideford, Ben Edgell of Tiverton and Dominic Mackle of Newton Abbot. Indeed the five teams who finished at the top contained a substantial proportion of the Devon County first team.

The competition remained open until the final round when the Tiverton Buzzards pulled clear to retain the THOMAS TROPHY.  A new trophy, generously presented by Exmouth veteran Fred Hodge, was awarded to the best performance by a team with a total grade under 600. This was shared by Teignmouth “A” and Tiverton Kestrels. A further small trophy for teams under 450 was won by the team from Torquay Boys’ Grammar School.

The event was expertly controlled by ECF arbiter John Ariss from Torquay and a first-class tea was provided by Jenny Kinder, wife of the home club’s President Andrew Kinder.

This popular event has the potential to accommodate further teams – notable by their absence were teams from two of Devon’s largest towns Plymouth and Torquay. So if your club has not yet entered, why not join us in 2013?
