FUTURE COUNTY MATCHES

Brian Hewson advises of the following up-coming County Matches:-

1.  The Devon team entered in the ECF National Stages of the Open Championship have been drawn against Yorkshire in the Quarter-Finals to be played on Saturday 16th May at St. Edwards School, Cheltenham.  No doubt Yorkshire will be fielding a strong side.  If successful, Devon will be drawn against the winner of the Warwickshire v Kent. the semi-final to be played on 13/14th June.

2. The U 150 team that beat Staffordshire is drawn against Hertfordshire in the Quarter-Finals.  This match will be played on Saturday 16th May.  The winning team will meet either Warwickshire or Norfolk in the Semi-Final to be played on 13/14th June.

BRIAN HEWSON WRITES CONCERNING THE ABOVE MATCHES:-

My plea for a strong team for this match was obviously ignored as we had to field 8 second team players in the first team. My efforts to achieve 32 players were tested to the extreme and we settled for a 27 board match. I contacted about 60 players to get there, which makes me doubt whether I will continue as match captain, as I have not got the time to keep chasing players. Obviously the dates for all the fixtures have been sent out well in advance. Some had genuine reasons for not playing such as family illness, moving house etc (not valentines day!) and the second team players who had booked other things because the match was unscheduled.

Many thanks for those who made the effort and a particularly welcome to Steve Martin and John Knowles who have not played for Devon before and the return of Andrew Kinder. Unfortunately John Knowles' opponent dropped out at the last minute and he didn't get a game.

Nevertheless we won the second team friendly.
However the weakest Devon first team (in grade terms) since I moved to Devon in 1978 met a very strong Somerset team and in a cracking match we lost narrowly 8.5 - 7.5. We were outgraded on nearly every board but there were a lot of very close games. There were very good wins by John Wheeler, Bill Ingham, Andrew Kinder, David Toms, Steve Schofield and John Gorodi; in fact we scored 6 points on the bottom 9 boards. Somerset are favourites for the cup now and we are fighting for second place having lost 2 matches.

I hope to receive a better and early response for the first team match v Gloucestershire on 14th March and for the National Stages of the Open and U150.

I am on holiday 28th Feb to 7th March.

Brian Hewson (DCCA Match Captain)

Brian Hewson writes:

You will note that Hampshire put out strong teams including two Ugandan internationals that played in the world championships.

The first team was fairly evenly matched on grade but we were crushed 10.5 - 5.5 with only Dominc Mackle and Jonathan Underwood winning. Jacek put in a fine performance on board one. As a result we need to beat both Somerset and Gloucestershire to retain the Harold Meek cup; note that Hampshire lost to Somerset so it could come down to board count even as Somerset lost to Cornwall. So I hope that players will make an effort to be available for the last two matches and the National Stages.

The second team however won 7.5 - 4.5 in a 12 board match fighting back well from being 2 behind at one stage. Therefore Devon retain the Wayling Cup.

Please would all players note the following National Stage Draw for your diaries:-
Open (really for over 150 grade) on one day of 15/16th May weekend home to the winner of North runner up or Midlands 3rd place; venue and opponent to be decided later.
U150 (effectively our second team) is to play a preliminary round on a day of 25/26th April weekend v the Midlands runner up and if we win the next round will be against Southern runner up away on a day of 15/16th May weekend.
It is important that we put out a good side in these matches as the opposition is likely to be strong.

THE 2009 INTER-COUNTY JAMBOREE

The 2009 Inter-County Jamboree ended in victory for the trophy holders - the South.

Although hosted by the East the event was held in the Torquay Boys' Grammar School in a spacious room that provided very comfortable playing conditions.  Thanks are due to Trefor Thynne who sought out the venue, made the refreshments and conducted the administration.  Unfortunately the North did not compete.  Shortage of players has kept them out of the competition for some years now.

The South were quickly into their stride by winning the first three games to finish.  The remaining games were of sterner stuff, the last finishing at 18:30.

Final Scores:-        1st South 7˝ points.

                           2nd East 5˝ points

                           3rd West 5 points

PROGRAMME OF COUNTY MATCHES FOR SEASON 2008/09

There has been a conflict of the county match dates approved at our Council meeting and the 4NCL dates. Consequently I have altered our dates and append them below for your comments. Also Somerset have withdrawn from the Wayling Cup competition but will play a friendly match with Dorset.

Please note that the Hants v Devon match has been changed to 24th Jan due to clashes with Hants events of the 10th. I hope this doesn't cause a problem.
