1922
- 2005 Ian
Mason of the Teignmouth Chess Club passed away recently, at the age of
82, his funeral service being held at St. James Church, Teignmouth on
Thursday 28th July. He
had been Devon's Match Captain for 10 years until ill health forced
him to hand this job over last year. He brought to this post a
thoroughness of organisation and eye for detail that meant Devon only
rarely defaulted so much as a single board in any match. He took Devon
to several National Finals, though titles eluded him. However, he took
great pleasure in Devon's success in the Under-175 championship this
summer. In recognition of his service to the county he had recently
been elected as one of Devon's three Life Vice Presidents. He
was brought up in the Mill Hill area of North London, attending
Haberdashers Askes School, and very early on showed both an aptitude
for chemistry and a strong Christian belief, being active in the
Crusader movement.
He
had intended to join the Met. Office on leaving school, but the War
intervened, and he spent those years testing munitions at Woolwich
Arsenal and Runcorn. After the War, he graduated in chemistry from
Birkbeck, eventually gaining a doctorate, and started a promising
career in chemistry at Repton. Yet
he gave this up for a teaching post at St. Clement Danes School in the
City. He spent 3 years as Deputy Head of Swaine School in Rayleigh,
Essex, before being appointed Head of Preston Manor Grammar School,
Wembley, which soon became a comprehensive school. The chess organiser
Neville Belinfante was one of his later pupils. He
retired to Teignmouth in 1982, where he quickly became involved in the
inter-denominational church run at the Richard Newton Community Centre
in north Teignmouth, where his London contacts proved useful.
Similarly, his organisational experience led him to become general
factotum at his local chess club, which he served for over 20 years. |

ACROSS THE AROUND THE WORLD IN 18 GAMES A British Museum Exhibition
23 July to 17 September 2005 An amazing assortment of board games from around the world and throughout the ages. These include the Roman game of Duodecim Scripta, the ancient Eygyptian game of Senet, Ludo in its original form of Pachisi, Snakes and Ladders and its Indian prototypes, Monopoly from the USA, and Mancala which is played widely in Africa. The centrpiece of the show is a selection of the Lewis Chessmen. These exquisite walrus ivory pieces were probably carved in Norway in the 12th century. They were found on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides in 1831, and since then have become the most famous chess "set" in the world. RAMM is proud to play host to Britain's two most important medieval board games. Gloucester City Museum has kindly agreed to lend its Tables Set, the forerunner on modern backgammon. Special events in partnership with Devon County Chess Club. Play chess with your family and friends on our quiet games table within the exhibition gallery. Members of Devon County Chess Club and other local players will take on all comers at set times during the exhibition period. Please ask at the Museum reception for details or telephone 01392 665858. Torquay Boys' Grammar School v Exmouth & Rolle Faculty Chess Club Friendly Match - Wed. 29th June 2005. |
For this near-annual match, the school team were well below their full strength as a number of older pupils were exam-tied, and team leader Trefor Thynne opted to concentrate on match arrangements rather than play. However the potential of their top boards, which included 3 England Under-11 Internationals, was not to be under-estimated, as Robert Thompson's match grade of 178 demonstrated.
The match consisted of two 1 hour games, and the play generally was lively, although the experience of the senior players meant they were able to pounce on any errors, especially later in the game.

* Denotes those who played for the opposition to even up the numbers.
As results started to come in, there was never more than 2 points between the two sides the whole evening, but with 2 games to finish and the Coast 2 points up, and Brian Gosling clearly losing, it was Mark Abbott's draw in a difficult endgame against Sean Pope that secured a narrow win for the 3 coastal clubs. Thus the final result was only determined with the 28th game to finish.
Results were fairly evenly spread throughout the team, from top to bottom.
Thanks to all for turning out.
Bob Jones
