CLUB DETAILS A VERY IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT It is now definite that St Marychurch Chess Club will move its venue to the spacious and welcoming surroundings of Torquay Bridge Club, Zion Road, Torquay from 1st January 2009. For the time being the club night will continue to be Thursday, though the venue is available on other nights and our AGM may decide that another evening would be preferable. Instead of paying a rental to the Bridge Club each member attending will pay £2 per night. If a merger with the Bridge Club is approved by both clubs in March the club will become Torquay Chess and Bridge Club and members will pay a pro rata membership subscription for the remainder of 2009, which at present is £22 per calendar year. The charge per night per member will be £1.50. Juniors will pay at a reduced rate, expected to be 50%. DirectionsThe club is approached from Tor Hill Road, which at that point is one-way. From Paignton you may turn left at the first traffic lights after Livermead, signed A3022 Newton Abbott, follow signs to Town Centre (bearing right), along Falkland Rd, Lucius St, Tor Church Rd and turning sharp left at the 3rd traffic lights (by the church –you can’t miss it!) which should be Tor Hill Road. It is advisable to park on the left side of this road (before the road narrows) and walk up and around the corner to the left along Zion Road. Again follow this road round to the left and you will see theTorquay Bridge Club sign lit up. If you risk driving there, there is parking space for 6-7 cars at the club (if you are early), and further on, if you turn left at the top of Tor Hill Road, there may be spaces by the roadside opposite the Police Station. If there is no room you must continue down Belgrave Road and if necessary continue in a circle by turning left at the lights leading into Lucius St. From other directions aim for Belgrave Road, turn at the traffic lights into Lucius St, opposite Falkland Rd, and continue as above. There is wheelchair access, but it is advisable to inform the club secretary in advance if this is required. Visit this website for a map. Chess players from other clubs are welcome as visitors, at £2 per head, and St Marychurch members are urged to support the club as much as possible, playing their club championship games when not involved in matches! First club night at the new premises will be 8th January 2009, when our 2nd team entertain Newton Abbott. When and where: See above About the club: The club has a wide range of ages and playing strengths and new members of any standard are very welcome.
