CLUB DETAILS

Torquay Chess Club now meets upstairs at Torquay Bridge Club, Zion Road, Torquay.  Instead of paying a rental to the Bridge Club each member attending pays £2 per night, juniors paying £1.

Club night is Wednesday starting at 7:00p.m.

Chess players from other clubs are welcome as visitors, and members are urged to support the club as much as possible, playing their club championship games when not involved in matches!

About the club:

The club has a wide range of ages and playing strengths and new members of any standard are very welcome.

We have teams in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd divisions of the Torbay league and in the knockout cup and Rapidplay league. We also run internal club competitions at standard time controls and at rapidplay.

So, if you have an interest in chess or are looking to play competitive chess, please feel free to come along.

Directions

The club is approached from Tor Hill Road, which at that point is one-way.

From Paignton you may turn left at the first traffic lights after Livermead, signed A3022 Newton Abbot, follow signs to Town Centre (bearing right), along Falkland Rd, Lucius St, Tor Church Rd and turning sharp left at the 3rd traffic lights (by the church –you can’t miss it!) which should be Tor Hill Road. Since parking space at the club is very limited, it is advisable to park on the left side of this road (before the road narrows) and walk up and around the corner to the left along Zion Road. Again follow this road round to the left and you will see the Torquay Bridge Club sign lit up. Further on there may be parking spaces on the left of Tor Hill Road, or after turning left at the top by the roadside opposite the Police Station. If there is no room go on down Belgrave Road and if necessary continue in a circle by turning left at the lights leading into Lucius St and back to Tor Hill Road.

From other directions aim for Belgrave Road, turn at the traffic lights into Lucius St, opposite Falkland Rd, and continue as above.

There is wheelchair access, but it is advisable to inform the club secretary in advance if this is required.

Visit this website for a map.

The 2010/11 club championship was won by Andy Dunn, who won all his games, with Peter Ruszelak runner-up.
Dennis Cowley was unable to complete his games due to family commitments.

28/01/12 - Geoff Rosser Reports:

In the Club Championship Adam Clarke suffered a shock defeat against Nijad Rahimli, with a late blunder in an apparently drawn position. This leaves only Nijad and Dennis Cowley still unbeaten.

In the Minor Championship Simon Howard pulled off a surprise win over John Ariss, so Simon is still on 100%, although with only two games played. Everyone else has lost at least one game, but the competition is wide open."

Club Championship (15 December 2011)

Geoff Rosser reports:

The second round of games in the Club Championship has been held during the last week with some surprises.

In the Major Geoff Rosser managed to draw against Nijad Rahimli, Adam Clarke is still unbeaten (not a surprise!).

Unfortunately Terry Greenaway has some personal problems and his game will be rescheduled.

In the Minor Tom Maloney pulled off a shock victory over Stephen Greeno, while John Ariss through sheer persistence remains on 100%."

Devon Team Blitz Tournament 2011

This annual tournament to open the season took place at the Newton Abbot Clubhouse on Sunday 9th October, and the growing popularity of the event was evidenced by the increase in entries.

At the end of the day, the spoils went to Tiverton, whose 4 players came from 3 counties. In fact, the final scores almost uncannily reflected the total grades of the teams.

Torquay were represented by Adam Clarke, Andy Dunn, Geoff Rosser and Stephen Greeno

Torquay Chess Club  AGM  18th May 2011  7 pm

The Secretary reported in brief on the previous season 2010/11. Despite  being rather unsuccessful in the Torbay and District Chess League, our membership has remained stable and all fixtures were completed with very few individual boards defaulted. We should be pleased that we are keeping Torquay on the chess map and helping to keep the League a viable competition. The one outstanding result this year was winning the Knockout Trophy for the third year running. The rejigged Club Championship ran successfully and resulted in a worthy winner in Andy Dunn, who won all his games.

The treasurer reported a healthy balance in the account, which stands at £385.20 in credit. Income and expenditure for the year was almost identical.

The Secretary suggested that 6 chess clocks could be bought for about £150 leaving about £200 in the account. Since there seems little point in leaving money in the account unnecessarily, as it earns virtually no interest, he thought that next season an annual subscription could be waived for existing members, with a joining fee of £10 being paid by new members (£5 for juniors under 18). Adam Clarke had reservations about leaving very little in the account and the proviso was made that if the club ran unexpectedly short of funds members would be expected to contribute. This was proposed by Tom Maloney, seconded by Geoff Rosser and carried by the meeting.

Trophies were awarded to Andy Dunn for winning the Club Championship and to Peter Ruszelak for being runner-up.

Andy Dunn suggested we look out for a possible second-hand trophy to be used permanently for the club championship. Tom Maloney mentioned that there had been one at one time but no-one knew where it was now.

Geoff Rosser was re-elected as Club Secretary.

Peter Ruszelak was re-elected as Club Treasurer.

Simon Howard was elected as Competitions Secretary, and John Ariss offered assistance in contacting members if required.

John Ariss agreed to publicise the club through the website and contacts with the Herald Express.

Andy Dunn agreed to act as additional signatory to the bank account.

The Secretary asked if there would be support for a summer tournament but there was little interest. He wondered if it was worth remaining open through the summer but since some members are still interested in coming it was decided to keep the club open informally, although serious activity will not begin until after September 1st.

The following teams and captains were decided on for 2011/12:

1st team  Andy Dunn (Division 1)

2nd team Geoff Rosser (Div 2)

3rd team Simon Howard (either Div 3 or Div 4)

Rapidplay Peter Ruszelak

Knockout Andy Dunn

The purchase of chess clocks was discussed at some length. It was agreed that more clocks are required, and the preference is for analogue clocks rather than digital. It was decided that we should buy 4 analogue clocks and 2 digital to make our number of digital clocks up to 4. John Ariss offered to help with the purchase since Teignmouth were also buying some clocks and he would negotiate the best price for a quantity.

The Secretary asked if there were any comments on the suitability of the Bridge Club as a venue and although Tom Maloney mentioned the problems of car parking it was felt that we could not improve on the venue without paying considerably more. The Bridge Club appear to be happy with the arrangement and accustomed to our presence. If they (or we) wish to change the arrangement three months notice is needed.

The Secretary said that the club should always offer visiting teams refreshment as a matter of course since at present this is done rather haphazardly on an individual basis. After some discussion it was agreed that the team captain should decide before a match started on the best way he would like it organised and make it clear to the teams.
