Simon Waters has sent the following reports:-

THE REX WILLIS MEMORIAL GAMBIT TOURNAMENT 2006

This tournament was held at the Clifton Road Games centre on 24th October 2006.  This is a fixed opening, five round Swiss that does not qualify for grading.  The time limit was ten minutes each per game.

Result:-

1. G. Bolt 4½

2= R. Pope 4

2= D. Regis

Gambit Openings used:-

Urusov Gambit 1.e4 e5 2.Bc4 Nf6 3.d4

Cunningham Gambit 1.e4 e5 2.f4 exf4 3.Nf3 Be7 4.Bc4.

Caro- Kann 1.e4 e5 2.d4 d5 3.Be3

Ruy Lopez - Cordel Gambit 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 43.Bb5 Bc5 4.c3 f5

Albin Counter-Gambit 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e5

Seventeen players took part and whilst Graham Bolt was the highest rated player, it was much harder fought than the result suggests.  Richard Pope played well, and both Dr. Regis and Richard dropped their only games to Graham Bolt.

OPEN EVENING

On Tuesday evening, 14th November, Exeter Chess Club is holding an "Open Evening" at Clifton Road Games centre, starting at 19:30.

We are inviting anyone interested to come along and meet the members.

Members will be bringing along "wacky chess sets" to give the evening an appropriate informal atmosphere, and hopefully avoid the "dread silence" that can meet prospective members if they happen along on an evening when there are matches in progress.

We will be demonstrating the clubs other facilities, including boards for go, and Oriental chess variants, demonstration boards, and chess computers.

A NOTICE FROM SIMON WATERS

This invitation expires in 30 days. Saturday, 28 October 2006 - 5:17 PM GMT

simon@technocool.net has invited you to join the exeterchessclub group!
    Hi,

I wish to form a mailing list to allow members of Exeter Chess club, and local chess organisers to stay in touch more effectively by email.

If it works it should make it easier to announce local chess events, without each captain, or organisers, having to maintain a separate list of email addresses for Exeter members.

I also trust that we can have a small amount of discussion about the Exeter Chess club website, and the future and history of Chess in Devon, and other topics of interest, without creating too much noise for people just here for the announcements.

Please sign-up and see if we can make this work.

I'm initially inviting members, captains of Devon teams that I know of, and one or two others, but please feel free to extend the invitation to anyone who has an interest in the local chess scene.

Simon
