and all being well a new constitution need
voting on together with the other usual

the running of the club and to make
suggestions how it may be improved. Please
see the attached agenda and AGM minutes.
The dates of
the other traditional events and one new
event are listed below.
07.10.08

match by Graham Bolt club champion.

(Tournament secretary) is organising the

Exeter enjoyed
great success in the Devon County Chess
Association competitions this year winning
the Bremridge cup (Div.1), the Moyle cup
(Div.4) and the Peter Rooke Memorial
knockout cup. Congratulations to all of the
captains and players involved. Please can
members let me know if they wish to play or
even act as a captain in the Devon
competitions on occasional Saturday
afternoons or in the Exeter & District
league competitions on Tuesday evenings.
The committee
is always looking at ways to boost
membership. If you know of any potential new
members please encourage them to come along
on Tuesday evenings. The first couple of
evenings are free.
If you are on
the internet why not look at the following
chess websites some of which may already be
familiar.
exeterchessclub.org.uk for Dr Dave
Regis’ excellent chess coaching materials
and much else.
yahoo.com
join the Yahoo group exeterchessclub which
is a very useful message board for Exeter
chess club and other chess related news. I
wouldn’t download the annoying yahoo toolbar
though.
chessdevon.co.uk for all the local chess
news.
redhotpawn.com a chess site I assure
you. You can play a sort of electronic
correspondence chess or unrated blitz chess
chesstempo.com for fun tactical chess
puzzles

EXETER BLITZ TOURNAMENT
ISHAN RAMDEWAR REPORTS:-
Despite
a few hiccups (a mix-up with a late entry in
round 3), the
blitz event went quite well overall. We had 19
entrants (one of those
being Tom Stephenson- a very awkward customer!),
£50 in prizes and I hope that everyone enjoyed
it.
I'd like to apologise to Brian Aldwin who should
have recieved half of
the grading prize for the U-90 section. This was
due to Gareth being
awarded an extra one-point bye by accident. The
prizes are being
sorted out, so fear not!
I have corrected the results and the cross-table
is below.
congratulations to our overall winners, Andy
Boyne and Dave Regis who each scored 9/10 and
won a hefty prize of £6.25 each! Also
congratulations to Jonathan Waley who, with a
grade of just 90 managedto win the U150 prize
with 7/10, to Bob Jones who won the U120
prizewith 6/10 and to our joint winners of the
U90 prize: Gareth Ward and Brian Aldwin.

Simon Waters has written to all members as follows:
3rd January 2009
Hi All,
Ish is organising a Blitz Tournament this Tuesday, just
forwarding his
message, and hope to see you at Clifton Road games at
19:20.
Simon
On the first Tuesday of 2009 (6th of January), Exeter
Chess Club will
be hosting a 10 round open blitz tournament.
The time control is 5 minutes each for the entire game.
It is my
experience that this is a very popular time control, so
I thought I'd
give the people what they want and organise a
tournament!
Everyone is welcome to enter, regardless of strength or
whether they
are Exeter members. As such, there will be graded prizes
so that
everyone has a chance of winning a prize. The tournament
is open, so in
theory a player graded 100 could win, for instance, the
U150 prize.
The graded prizes will be given as follows (25% to
each): (Open), U150,
U120, U90. ECF rapidplay grades will be used if
available. If a player
has no rapidplay grade, their "Old Style" ECF grade will
be used.
Otherwise, we will use take an estimated grade. No
player may win more
than one prize.
Entry is £3 for non-members of Exeter, and £2.50 for
members. 100% of
the money taken will be distributed as prizes!
Hope to see you there! Could you please forward this to
anyone who you
think would be interested in playing, particularly at
other Devon clubs.
Ish
Ray Shepherd writes:-
Results for the 2007/8
Club Championship and General competitions were as
follows:-
Championship :- Winner
Graham Bolt with 5 ½ / 6
General :- Winner Dan
Frean 4 ½ / 6
The competitions went well
and I had to do very little reminding to get folk to
finish their games. A very commendable result from Dan ,
who for a time threatened to catch up with Graham!
The email system is
working well and I will be continuing it this year so
please provide your latest email address on the entry
form if you have one. Entries will be taken for the
2008/9 competitions up to 7th October ,
although I will take late entries in the usual way. If
you wish to be assured of being included in the first
round draw though please put your entry details on the
sheet on the notice board as soon as possible. Of course
, that depends on whether you wish me to control the
competitions again this year!
