Charles Warren advises of the following successes of the Broadclyst School chess teams:
26th May 2011 Thomas Kolya has been selected to play in the England Under 10 team in Monmouth on 5th June. Becky Trott and Reece Whittington are picked for the SW England Team Under 11 at the same event. Tomas Trott will be playing in the SW England Under 14 team. 17th May 2011 Two weeks ago three girls from the Academy School, Broadclyst Community Primary, travelled to North London to play in the All England Girls Chess Match. Twenty two girls took part from counties all over England, yet no other school had three girls selected. Last weekend, both the Broadclyst under 11 and under 9 chess teams played in the semi-finals of the English Primary Schools Chess Associations National Schools Team Championships. They had won their place in the semis by winning their zone at Swindon earlier in the year. The u11 and u9 semi-finals were both made up of 22 other teams who had gained their place through their respective zonal tournaments earlier in the year. Both of the Broadclyst teams won through to the finals, made up of the last 8 schools in England, that is to be played in July. This is unprecedented. There are over 16000 primary schools in England. It is important to note that 3 of the 6 players in the under 11 team are girls and that 5 out of 6 of the under 9 team are girls. There is much to this story; recent discussion that chess should be on the curriculum; chess at Broadclyst is played every lunchtime and two evenings a week; state school through to final; the number of girls playing chess and the number of girls playing chess at that level; and so on.
16th February 2011 Broadclyst under 11 team played with 20 schools in their zone at Swindon on Saturday 12th February; schools from the west and south home counties and from the south and west of England. They played 5 rounds and won a total of 20 games from a possible 25. They won the zonal tournament finishing ahead of Magdalen College. Thomas K., Becky T., Reece W., Tom F. and Ella B. played tremendous chess. Broadclyst’s fledgling under 9 team, Josh P., Hannah B., Grace F., Ebony H. and Megan J. won 21 out of 25 and finished 3.5 ahead of their nearest rivals. (Notice... 4 out of 5 are girls). Both teams are through to the semi-final at Brean Sands in May. The under 11 team were at Eton College the week before getting some serious practice in the Yateley Manor Last Chance Saloon.
Broadclyst are Devon under 11 schools' team champions for the 8th
year running !
The fledgling Under 9 team are also Devon Champions.
Tom K. Cameron W. and Becky finished joint second in the individual
under 11 Devon championships with 5/6.
Becky was also awarded best girl in Devon.
Tom and Cameron are under 10 so they shared 2nd in the under 10
championships.
Ella was the highest scoring under 10 girl with 4/6.
Hannah was 3rd in the under 9s and was the highest scoring girl.
Two ex Broadclyst boys Tomas Trott and Ben Newman played in the
under 15 championships. They shared 1st place so are the under 15
Devon Champions. They also won the under 12 section, so two titles
for them.
Tom K.,Becky, Cameron, Reece, Tom F. and Ella were selected for the
Devon under 11 team.
Hannah, Hanifah and Grace the under 9 team. All the best, Charles.Warren |
