I write to
remind you of the Union’s annual Inter-County Jamboree, details of which
are:-
Date:
Sunday 21st
September 2008.
Venue: The
Tacchi-Morris Arts Centre, School Rd., Taunton. TA2 8PD.
Start:
2.30 p.m.
Teams: 12
players.
Grades: In
the Graded section, a team's grade total must not exceed 1,500. i.e. Team
average 125. Ungraded players deemed to be 125; Grades U-90 deemed to
be 90. 2008/09 standard grades to be used.
Entry Fee:
£17 per team. Cheques payable to “W.E.C.U.” with entry form.
Entries:
Entry form to be sent to the Union Secretary, nearer the time if wished.
Lists:
Team lists & grades to Union Secretary by Fri. 19th
September 2008.
In the
first instance, however, I need to have some indication of the overall
commitment to the event, and would be grateful if an immediate response
could be sent to me. The decline in interest in this event was arrested
last year with 4 teams in each section, (Winners - Wilts & Torbay League)
and it is hoped this trend can be continued.
Please
note:
The
venue is central to the WECU area, near to the M5, with good parking
facilities.
The date
does not clash with any 4NCL weekends, as far as I know.
Please
return the attached pro forma A.S.A.P. to give an early indication of
likely response.
The
actual entry form (page 2) may be returned later if wished.
Yours
sincerely,
R. H.
Jones.

WECU Jamboree.
Tacchi-Morris Arts Centre, Taunton
23rd September 2007
Several
factors resulted in arresting the recent decline of this traditional
get-together of westcountry teams.
(a)
Identification of a suitable venue, central to the Union's area.
(b)Early
notification to county captains of the event details.
(c)Avoiding
clashes with other events, such as 4NCL weekends.
The
Tacchi-Morris Arts Centre came to the rescue last year, when another
projected venue fell through at short notice, yet, as it turned out,
this may have been a stroke of good fortune, as the Taunton venue has
proved eminently suitable. Martin Worrall, of the Taunton Chess
Club is also a member of the technical staff there, and was able to get
much of the preliminary work done, and provided free liquid refreshments
throughout the afternoon.
All this
resulted in there being four teams in each section, providing a good mix
of almost 100 players from as far apart as Plymouth, Cheltenham and
Weymouth.
Devon's
stranglehold on the top section was broken, partly by the welcome entry
of a strong contingent from Wiltshire, who eventually romped home by 2
clear points.
In the
graded section, the captain of the defending team was unable to raise
sufficient interest to be able to field a strong side, and Torbay took
the opportunity and won well.
WECU
president, Gerry Jepps, presented the cups, noting en passant, that he
had just been appointed the first ECF Arbiter, thus becoming a "small
footnote in chess history".
